About Fuad Samatar
My name is Fuad Samatar, founder and Qualifying Builder of Mognova. My path into architecture and construction began with drawing.
From an early age, I was interested in realism—studying light, shadow, proportion, and detail. Drawing taught me to observe carefully, think precisely, and communicate ideas visually.
I was later introduced to architectural drafting and 3D modeling. These tools connected creativity with structure and showed me how an idea could move from a sketch to a detailed plan—and ultimately become a built space.
Education
I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management from the University of Minnesota. This education gave me a practical foundation in construction planning, scheduling, estimating, materials, coordination, and project execution.
I later earned a Master of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College, where I strengthened my understanding of design, restraint, intention, spatial thinking, and the relationship between people and the places they inhabit.
Studying both construction management and architecture taught me to evaluate projects from two connected perspectives: how they should be designed and how they can be built responsibly.
Professional Experience
After graduate school, I worked across several areas of the building industry, including:
- Land surveying
- Electrical design
- Architectural design
- Construction planning and coordination
Each role gave me a different perspective on the building process. Land surveying taught me to understand the site. Electrical design showed me the importance of technical coordination. Architectural design strengthened my ability to organize spaces and communicate ideas. Construction experience taught me how decisions made on paper affect the work performed in the field.
Through these experiences, one principle became clear:
“When design and construction are separated, responsibility becomes fragmented.”
Design decisions can lose their connection to real-world execution, leaving construction teams to solve problems that should have been addressed earlier. This realization shaped my commitment to the design-build approach.
Why I Chose Design-Build
I believe design and construction should work as one continuous process.
Design-build allows me to consider aesthetics, function, constructability, cost, existing conditions, and project risks together. It helps identify potential problems earlier, improves coordination, and gives clients a clearer path from the initial idea to completion.
My role is not only to design or build. It is to connect the decisions made throughout the entire process and help clients understand what is happening, what is required, and what comes next.
My Approach
I approach every residential project with five priorities:
- Listen carefully and understand the client’s needs.
- Clearly define the project before work begins.
- Connect design decisions with construction realities.
- Identify risks and constraints as early as possible.
- Communicate consistently throughout the process.
My goal is to make residential design and construction more organized, understandable, and predictable.
Designing for Real People
Residential projects are personal. They affect how families live, move, gather, and plan for the future.
Some clients are making a major investment for the first time. Others are remodeling for safety, accessibility, aging in place, or multigenerational living. Each situation requires more than technical expertise—it requires patience, clarity, and thoughtful guidance.
I believe a home should support the people who live in it. Good design should be practical, intentional, safe, and responsive to real needs.

Looking Ahead
